The Pura Vida Latin Music Festival is a celebration of the diversity, eclecticism and sophistication of contemporary urban Latin culture. More than ten bands will be performing at major venues and festivals around Australia. It starts on 17th September in Canberra and, after stops in Melbourne and Brisbane, finishes in Sydney on 6th October with artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay & Venezuela performing at prestigious venues and festivals around the country.

The road shows makes a few stops in Sydney with performances at The Basement (September 22 & 25 and October 5th), and the Oxford Arts Factory (October 6).

Pura Vida Latin Music Festival was born to offer Australia an opportunity to explore one of Latin America’s best ready for export product, an amazing catalogue of music… says Frank Madrid, producer of the road show.  We wanted to stay away from stereotypes and present a wide array of artists and genres, as eclectic and diverse as possible.”

the most beautiful samba voice in Brazil

Samba-lovers will appreciate a mesmerizing performance by the Brazilian Queen of Nu Samba, Aline Calixto, who is regarded as one of Brazil’s most promising new artists and will share the bill with Uruguayan boy-wonder Martin Buscaglia, who is some kind of South American Prince with luscious candombe-funk music that is gentle, percussive and very groovy, like Beck in pure Tropicalia style. They play The Basement on September 22.

...like Beck in pure Tropicalia style

For those interested in a truly unique experience, the Festival presents the dramatically unusual voice of Alda Rezende at Sydney’s temple of jazz, The Basement on Sunday, September 25. She will be accompanied by master of percussion Esdra “Nenem” Ferreira to regale us a mix of Jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba and Pop. These two Brazilian musical ambassadors will be supported by la crème de la crème of Australasian jazz: double-bassist extraordinaire Jonathan Zwartz, prodigious pianist Marcello Maio, celebrated saxophonist Lucien Johnson and guitarist extraordinaire Alistair Campbell.

Ska with Latin flavour...

Also at The Basement Desorden Público will bring their mix of ska, Latin rockreggae and traditional Latin music at a midnight show on Wednesday October 5th.

In an effort to show how eclectic Latin music is Pura Vida will bring two of the hottest urban acts in the continent, ChocQuibTown and Renegado.  Afro-Colombian Latin Grammy Award winner’s Choc Quib Town, with their sleek and often rapid fire brand of tropical style of hip-hop and Brazilian hip-hop sensation Renegado and his smooth mix of Reggae, Maracatu, Cuban music and Samba with North American Rap will perform at Sydney’s new temple of cool, The Oxford Arts Factory on October 6th.

the most famous Colombian band at the moment
