The Pura VidaLatin Music Festival is a celebration of the diversity, eclecticism and sophistication of contemporary urban Latin culture. More than ten bands will be performing at major venues and festivals around Australia. It starts on 17th September in Canberra and, after stops in Melbourne and Brisbane, finishes in Sydney on 6th October with artists from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela performing at prestigious venues and festivals around the country.
The road show makes a few stops in Brisbane with performances at Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane Powerhouse.
“Pura Vida Latin Music Festival was born to offer Australia an opportunity to explore one of Latin America’s best ready for export product, an amazing catalogue of music… says Frank Madrid, producer of the road show. We wanted to stay away from stereotypes and present a wide array of artists and genres, as eclectic and diverse as possible.”
The line up includes some internationally-celebrated acts including ground-breaking techno folk ensemble and brainchild of Academy Award Winner Gustavo Santaolalla, Terraplén (Sep 17); Uruguayan boy-wonder Martin Buscaglia, who is some kind of South American Prince with luscious candombe-funk music that is gentle, percussive and very groovy, like Beck in pure Tropicalia style (Sep 20); and Brazilian Queen of Nu Samba, Aline Calixto, who is regarded as one of Brazil’s most promising new artists (Sep 21st).

“Alda is versatility at it best: opera, jazz, bossa nova, samba, classics, electronic music and pop – she can do them all and excels at it”. Folha de Sao Paulo.
For those interested in a truly unique experience, the Festival presents the dramatically unusual voice of Alda Rezende accompanied by master of percussion Esdra “Nenem” Ferreira with a mix of Jazz, Bossa Nova, Samba and Pop, supported by double-bassist extraordinaire Jonathan Zwartz, prodigious pianist Marcello Maio, celebrated saxophonist Lucien Johnson, guitarist extraordinaire Alistair Campbell (Sep 23rd).
Grammy Award winning Afro-Colombian hip-hop trio Choc Quib Town with their tropical style of rhythm and Brazilian hip-hop artist Renegado’s mix of Reggae, Maracatu, Cuban music and Samba with North American Rap will turn the Brisbane Powerhouse into a celebration of urban poetry and rhythms on October 5th while the kings of folk rock fusion Victor Valdes & The Marin Brothers and the Latin ska, Latin rock and reggae of iconic Venezuelan band Desorden Público will show how eclectic Latin music really is.
